Reading for Orders

The Free Episcopal Church offers a Pastoral Formation program that is commonly referred to as Reading for Orders. The foundation of this time-honored program of studies is the mentor-student relationship, fostering an individualized program specific to the needs and goals of each candidate.

In addition to preparing our clergy candidates for ministry, the FEC also requires our clergy to participate each year in Continuing Education.

Introduction to the Program

No degree or license is conferred for successful completion of the program. The program specifically prepares students for the deaconate and priesthood of the Free Episcopal Church. Successful completion of this program does not automatically entitle the student to ordination. The candidate's bishop will make the final determination of readiness for ordination based on performance in the candidate's studies, and performance in the other areas of candidacy.

The pastoral formation program is designed to equip clergy for a lifetime of reflection and study. Pastoral Formation will build on each individual candidate's life experience and formal education, and fill in the knowledge and experience gaps. The mentor will determine what subject areas will be required for each candidate.

How it Works

To be eligible for the formation program, an Application for Candidacy must be received and approved by the bishop. Based on the materials submitted with the Application (school transcripts, essays, resume), the bishop will determine the subject areas a candidate will be required to complete. A mentor will be assigned to each candidate, who will facilitate the program. Once begun, a subject area must be completed in no more than 3 months' time. Failure to complete the subject studies on time will necessitate taking the course again.

We know that both candidates and mentors have full lives, with work, home, and family obligations in addition to their ministries. This time of pastoral formation is also intended to help the student learn to balance the many competing personal obligations with their new ministerial duties.

Cost

The only cost to students is the cost of the texts themselves, and any postage associated with sending papers or projects via the mail. Students will be advised how to obtain the required and optional texts, and will be expected to purchase the texts for each assigned subject. Mentors donate their time and talents to make this program successful.
